Finn Wurtz

Bass

Born in the Bay Area and raised in Oakland, Finn feels tremendously lucky to have been exposed to a wide range of musical instruments and influences from a young age. Through formative experiences with music at family gatherings, in classical training, and with public-school music ensembles, Finn developed a musicality rooted in community, while encounters with jazz motivated Finn to further play with the genre in spaces like the Oaktown Jazz workshops. Later, while studying at UC Berkeley, Finn wandered into the world of vocal jazz by joining the Cal Jazz Choir, which kindled a lifelong love of communal jazz singing.

While Finn’s musical spirit transcends the artifice of genre, Finn feels especially at home with vocal jazz due to its spicy chord progressions, its zesty rhythms, the space it holds for improvisation, and the relative accessibility of the voice as a medium. Consequently, Finn jumped at the chance to sing with the cats in the Oakland Jazz Choir after returning to the East Bay from travels far and wide. Outside of improvising, performing, and dancing with music, Finn also enjoys exploring the Bay Area’s unique urban topography, partaking in its vibrant food scene, and getting paid to coordinate parts of its public transit infrastructure.
