About the Oakland Jazz Choir


The Oakland Jazz Choir is a highly auditioned, select performing group of 15-20 singers.  OJC sings traditional and contemporary jazz with original arrangements.  We have performed at Yoshis, SF Jazz Festival, Great American Music Hall, San Jose Jazz Festival, and the IAJE Convention in Long Beach.   


A $30/month dues is required.  Work-study positions are available. 


Auditioning singers preparation

  • Prior to the audition you will be provided with sheet music and an mp3 or other electronic file for learning your part.  Please allow enough time to learn your music.
  • Be prepared to stay a minimum of 4 hours.


Audition Procedure

  • Singers arrive with section parts pre-rehearsed.
  • Short choral rehearsal in sections 
  • Sing in octets, two to a part
  • Sing in quartets, one to a part
  • Select singers will be asked to perform a jazz solo piece with a corresponding scat over the changes.  Please bring sheet music, in your proper key.


What we are looking for:

  • Ability to sing on pitch
  • Strong feel for syncopation
  • Solid ability to hold a harmony part against other parts
  • Ability to blend vocally with others (singing and listening at the same time)
  • Team-focused attitude and a love for jazz
  • Ability to commit to weekly rehearsals (7:30 -10 pm) on either a Tuesday or Wednesday night, private practice on your own, occasional sectional or special rehearsals, and ability to make time for gigs.
  • Vocal ensemble experience preferred. 
  • Sight-reading/music-reading is helpful, but not required.
  • Solo or lead singing abilities are helpful, but not required.
